Job Description
Animal Ask is a research consultancy that aims to address this problem, supporting the global animal advocacy movement in its efforts to oppose animal exploitation. We achieve this by providing organisations and funders with research that assists them in making informed decisions about their advocacy efforts. Reallocating existing campaign resources and talent to the areas with the greatest potential for impact, exploring and unlocking new campaign opportunities in neglected regions or markets.
You will contribute to our research to help inform the strategy of advocacy groups in several key regions around the world through ongoing data collection, synthesis and interpretation.
These could include industry conditions and system mapping in regions with poor government data collection. Estimating the number of animals represented in companies supply chains such as eggs sold by supermarkets or restaurants. The total number of animals alive or killed in a jurisdiction and the total number of animal life-years experienced per year. All these areas are particularly important in the global south where existing data is more difficult to work with or unavailable.
Responsibilities
The role will largely focus on areas with very poor data availability. More of your time will be spent finding creative ways to around the limitations of currently public information.
Responsibilities could include:
- Collection and synthesis of government, NGO or international organization data sets
- Contacting companies, governments and other institutions for information requests
- Data generation and estimation based on publicly available data
- Coding and automation for ongoing updating
This job will involve rapid learning and application of knowledge. The ideal candidate will work alongside our team to develop and automate systems that will continue to serve the animal advocacy movement for years to come.
Role Requirements
Essential:
- Competence at fermi-estimation
- Ability to critically assess data quality
- Confidence working in low data availability environments
- Attention to detail
- Intuitive sense for data hypothesis generation
- Good written communication skills and a high degree of reasoning transparency
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Highly impact-driven
- Able to work autonomously in a small team
Bonus for
Experience in any of the following:
- Economics
- Mathematics
- Data Science
- Computer Science
- Originating from Latin America, Africa or South East Asia
- Knowledgeable about effective altruism
- Experience creating and evaluating cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs)
